WHAT MAKES ME STAND OUT FROM THE REST.
My Story
It all began as a young boy, wondering why so many BLACK TAXIS were driving through my area.
Now I'm older and can't be shielded by my parents anymore, I now know that all theses black taxi drivers were Belfast tour guides, telling tourists about the history of my community. As I got a bit older I wanted to know all about the Belfast conflict.
Now I'm a BELFAST TOUR GUIDE myself almost 17 years. (I'm getting old! Lol)
This is what makes me stand out from the rest.
All the years doing Political Tours/ Mural Tours/ Taxi Tours/ Belfast Tours, whatever you want to call them! Out of all the Belfast Taxi Tour guides in Belfast there are 5 from this community, I am one of them.
I'll be honest, being a local Belfast taxi driver for this community has really helped me in doing the Belfast tours also. Hearing firsthand their story's from back in the day. Just to let use know, what the men told me I took with a pinch of salt, you know what us men are like LOL.
Well that's my story. I'm very passionate about this job. No day feels like a work day when you love what you do, and I certainly do.
Northern Ireland Conflict / Belfast Conflict
HEARSAY - EXAMPLE - FACT
While on your Belfast Tour/ Mural Tour your driver will use these words often. HEARSAY – EXAMPLE – FACT.
Belfast was one of the most affected places in Northern Ireland during the CONFLICT for nearly 30 years.
During this time there was an estimated 3,500+ DEAD and nearly 50,000+ INJURED.
The nationalist community (Catholic) also known as republican or Irish, wanted NI to be united again with the Republic of Ireland.
NOW FLIP THE COIN.
The unionist community (Protestant) also known as loyalist or British, wanted to remain part of the UK and remain under British rule.
Paramilitaries - Gang's - Crew - Mob - Mafia
Here in Northern Ireland, paramilitaries were the one’s doing all the fighting. Over the years doing these Belfast Tours, some tourists would ask what paramilitaries are – In other country’s they would be referred to as gang’s, mafia, crew, mob. Hope this helps.
DRIVER'S
ME & MY TEAM ARE MOSTLY BELFAST LOCAL GUYS FROM BOTH COMMUNITY'S : CATHOLIC & PROTESTANT.
At the start we were all Belfast taxi drivers. Over the years working in Belfast City Centre we all became friends. It is still a controversial subject, so we are very respectful of each others beliefs. Yes we still have our jokes, but nothing intimidating or disrespectful. The Protestant community call this little place NORTHERN IRELAND, where as most Catholic's would call it the NORTH OF IRELAND, it's the same as DERRY/LONDONDERRY, so we do get a laugh when it comes to things like that. Believe it or not we have more in common than we thought. The only thing different was religion, but when work is over sadly (and still to this day) we go to our separate communities, where there are walls and gates that separate us and close at curfew. I know it sounds far-fetched but you need to see it to believe it.
This Belfast tour will give you what NO BOOK can. LOCAL BELFAST TOUR GUIDES and their experiences of living in Northern Ireland/ Ireland/ North of Ireland (whatever you want to call it). BELFAST is a different city compared to when I grew up during the conflict
.My kids lives are completely different compared to mine. (Thank God) Now that's what I call change! And for the better!
When you are picked up by your Belfast Taxi Tour Guide they will bring you onto the famous Belfast Falls Road which is the Catholic side of the community, and the famous Belfast Shankill Road which is the Protestant side of the community. Your Taxi Tour guide will explain the conflict in detail from start to finish while driving you through both of these communities. They will also stop the taxi at certain murals for you to take photographs and see it firsthand. Along the way your tour guide will stop at the famous Belfast Peace Wall, and you will get the opportunity to write your name/ your message on the wall.
All our Belfast Taxi Tours are around 90 minutes long. From pick up to drop off. We can arrange to pick you up from your location of choice, or at our chosen destination - Leonardo Hotel, Great Victoria Street, Belfast, BT1 6DY.
